My dear Whistler
I have prepared the affidavit[2][.] If you can come here say at 1 o'C[lock] on Monday, I will take it to Mr Avorys[3] [sic] at the Central Criminal Court, and have no doubt the fine[4] will be remitted. Do not come later than 1 o'C[lock] as Monday is the last day[.] 12 o'C[lock] will be better

2. affidavit
On 14 July 1873 JW was called to jury service by the Central Criminal Court (#12157). A fine of £5 was imposed upon him for non-appearance (H. Avory to JW, 18 August 1873, #11973). JW's affidavit, dated 25 August, stated that as an American citizen, he had not considered himself liable for service (#12155).
