Dear Mr Coggeshall -
Your letter of the 19th has been forwarded to me, here -
I have been for the past month or two - travelling to get rid of the effects of cold or influenza - and cannot say with certainty at what exact date I shall return to Paris -
However if Mr Canfield will write, when he himself is there, to 86 Rue. Notre Dame des Champs, I will try and make some appointment with him - with pleasure -
And I am very faithfully yours -
J. McNeill Whistler.
1. [March 1901]
Dated from the address. JW was advised to take a sea voyage in December 1900. After travels to Gibraltar, Algiers and Tangier, he spent the remainder of the winter of 1901 at Ajaccio on the island of Corsica. He did not return to London until early May.
This copy was made by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), JW's sister-in-law [more]. She also recorded a note made by Canfield on the envelope: 'Letter & receipt from J. McNeill Whistler. Esq. In reference to request through Mr. W. D. Coggeshall that Mr. Whistler should paint my portrait and his kind agreement to do so.'
