Dear Mr Whistler
I have seen your letter to Mr Way, the purport of which is that you think that the lithograph Exhibition should be offered to the highest bidder, our proposal not being a satisfactory one.
I should be quite ready to enter into any [p. 2] arrangement which would make the sale a more assured one to you which is what I gather that you want -
For it appears to me that a
sale purchase out & out of the stones or a portion of them would not be possible there being so many of them, and it being a matter of speculation as to which of them the public 'would fix' upon as favourites.
If you will fix the tirage from each stone - some of them I hear have been largely printed & sold already - also the nett [p. 3] price at which you would sell impressions of each - Also the length of time you would grant an exclusive sale for and your idea of how much the sale ought to be guaranteed I think that the business might quickly be settled - & quickly it must be if the tide is to be taken at the flood.
I gathered from Mr Way that you had a difficulty with regard to the claims upon the exhibition which another firm might have - but I think that this need not stand in the way - [p. 4] We are all anxious, no doubt, to have your lithographs - We have most of us had Exhibitions of your work - This will not probably be the last time you will exhibit by any means & others will have their turn, as we have waited for ours: we have at least the claim that we were the first to show your work -
I write in some haste as we have a Private View on today and I don't want to lose another post
Marcus B Huish
