May 10th 1900.
J. McNeill Whistler, Esq.,
I mail you today under another cover two copies of my newspaper in which you will find a "Memorial Sketch" of your lamented brother William who was my friend and comrade in Gen. Lee's army. There may be some inaccuracies in it but nothing material I trust. What I say expresses my high regard for him and also the esteem in which his comrades held him.
Some of the facts I got (p. 2) from his cousin Mrs. Genl. Clinch who is now in Walterboro, South Carolina with her grandson. She is more than 80 years of age and has suffered for months from a broken thigh.
It must be gratifying to you to know in what high regard your brother was held.
Robert R. Hemphill
Although addressed to JW in Paris, he was actually in London at this time.

The printed letterhead re-appears at the top of page two.
