I request you will, until you receive written directions from me to the contrary, treat and consider Miss Joanna Hiffernan[4] as fully empowered [5]for me, & on my behalf, to draw & sign Cheques, to negotiate for & take Discounts & Loans, with or without security, on my account, & to pledge or deposit any species of security for the repayment of such Loans; & generally, in all dealings & transactions between me and you, to act as fully & effectually for all intents & purposes as I could if personally present & acting in the matters & transactions aforesaid: for all which this shall be a sufficient authority to you, your Managers, Clerks & Officers

JW was about to depart for Valparaiso, Chile. He remained there during the Chilean conflict against Spain and did not return to London until September 1866. As well as giving Joanna Hiffernan power of attorney (#12127, #11480), he made a will in her favour (#11483). In addition, he authorised Rose and Joanna Hiffernan to negotiate the sale of fifteen etched copper plates of the Thames (#11482, #11480).
