Dear Mr Kennedy -
Two letters[2] from you this morning - one pointing out that the other is a joke - Tres bien[3] -
Of course I am delighted to pay any part of the expense you will let me for the getting together, mounting, framing etc. of the etchings for Chicago[4] - and enclose, with pleasure, cheque for £16 - which I make out to be somewhere about the 85 - dollars.
If there be anything over, take it off of the next cheque -
I shall always remain your debtor for all the trouble you have taken in the matter of the [p. 2] Chicago Exhibition in my behalf -
The joke about the little nude figure[5] I never shall see! - and really if that is the tone of the people's minds over there, I think the less we say about a Whistler Exhibition the wiser! -
You are mistaken in supposing that I made an error in the price of the seated draped figure[6] - It is three guineas - Six guineas for the two I sent you - Of course if you don't want to keep duplicates, return what you don't care for - I sent them to save time -
On the 19th Dec. I sent the last batch of lithographs - containing, among the rest, two proofs of the "Green & Yellow House[7]" (1st states - For these I charged no more than before - £3-3- your letter is dated Dec 29th You ought to have received them -
However I suppose you must have had them the next day, and that I shall have your acknowledgement for the whole lot together in a day or two -
With kindest regards
Always sincerely
J McN Whistler
I don't know about etchings just now - I am greatly interested in the lithographs - but I don't think things are very tempting from your [p. 3] account over there in America - and besides you are awfully far off? -
