Capstone Lodge

August 27th 87

My dear Whistler -

I came down here a day or two ago - at a moments notice - or I should have written you to let Mr Hanson[2] make out (now that you have the returned proofs[3]) your account against us -

I thought you would have done so, but Mr Edwards[4] doesn't say any thing about it in his letters - Let him have it to agree with his [p. 2] books, and on hearing from him, I'll get you all the money I can. But we haven't got it ourselves yet! notwithstanding the promises of the collectors - to pay "cash" - (This getting of money down, is a deuced difficult business - look at it from what side one will - as you know) - I'll do all I can for you with the Governor[5] however, - but he's awfully close just now, and until he has met the bill due [p. 3] at your bank in a day or two, - wont be inclined to pay ready money in anticipation of our receiving it - Goodness knows when!

But, as I said before, - if you really want some ready - I'll do what I can to get you some - but don't say "yes -" if you can help it.

[p. 4] Why don't you come down here? Its wonderfully pretty - - Clovelly[6] is the most beautiful village I ever saw in my life - you would like it -

Lovely air - and lots of babies -

Yours [illegible word]

Walter Dowdeswell
