My Dear Bancroft,
I am very glad to know that you are better, and hope you will get off to the warm climate at once - You could write and tell us if you find anything beautiful in the South of France. Perhaps you might go to the sea side - and find the picture you would like me to paint for you - and, if we can only get away from this horrid London, we might follow you and do it for you right off!
It is all right my dear Bancroft about the scale of prices. I fear I am not the brilliant man of business you suggest - If I were, I ought to be rich like the rest of 'em!
With kindest regards from us all to all of you.
Typescript copy of letter by an unknown hand, and partial copy published in auction catalogue, Sotheby, London, 8 December 1983, cat. no. 224. This transcription combines the clearest readings from the two letter copies and ignores a few basic typing errors by the copyist.
Rather than 'gallant' as Sotheby's catalogue entry suggests.
