Dr Sir
Whistler
I have received a communication[3] from the Metropolitan B[oar]d - but can do nothing further in the way of money until I actually have the lease[4] - this I have explained fully to Mr Nightingale's[5] representative several times - so that it will be of no use sending him to me at present
Yours
Geo Webb.

Notes:
1. George Webb
George Webb (b. ca 1835), of G. and W. Webb. lawyer [more].
2. Edward William Godwin
Edward William Godwin (1833-1886), architect and designer [more].
3. communication
Untraced. This would have concerned the White House, JW's studio house at Tite Street, then under construction. The London Metropolitan Board of Works objected to the austere facade of the original design by Godwin and withheld the lease on the land until the changes were made.
4. lease
Without a lease, the release of funds to complete the work on the White House was delayed. JW eventually moved in during June 1878.
5. Mr Nightingale
Benjamin Ebenezer Nightingale (b. 1838), builder [more].
