Vous avez[3] raison mon cher Maitre j'ai un beau portrait[4].
I also have something that all great portraits dont bring, and feel that the delightful days in the studios are among my most precious possessions.
[p. 2] Everything you say in your letter meets with my approbation including the adjective you apply to myself.
I gladly enclose what you ask for now and will do likewise later when I take the picture. [p. 3] I only hope you will come to see it and me some day at Biltmore where you will find it worthily housed.
Dr Barnard[5] waked me up at two this morning to prescribe a tonic and tell me there was nothing concealed, [p. 4] my cold is a bad one but just a cold. I am taking the 2.15 train today instead of the early one so as not to be hurried.
Remember me to Mr MacMonnies[6] and I hope the shoes sent with this will fit.
Yours devotedly
George Vanderbilt
The last day of 1897.
