Notes:

1.  [1/19 July 1888]
Before 20 July 1888; see #13546.

2.  Alfred Chapman
Alfred Chapman (1839-1917), engineer and collector [more].

3.  Dowdeswell and Dowdeswells
Art dealers and printsellers.

4.  Lc
This is a copy by Dowdeswell and Dowdeswells of a letter by Chapman. It is forwarded to JW on the same sheet of paper as #13546.

5.  Copy.
Double underlined.

6.  letters
See A. Chapman to Dowdeswell, #00582. The second letter is untraced.

7.  telegram
Untraced.

8.  pictures
See #00582. Chapman had agreed to lend Nocturne: Blue and Silver - Bognor (YMSM 100) to the Exposition, Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris, 1888. However, there seems to have been some difficulty in arranging insurance cover whilst the picture and another work, Nocturne: Grey and Gold - Chelsea Snow (YMSM 174), bound for Munich - were in transit. The picture was eventually sent via Dowdeswell's and insured with Lloyd's for £350. See A. Chapman to JW, #00578, #00579, #00580 and letter draft, JW to A. Chapman, #02229.

9.  cupids
Drawings by Beatrix Whistler (1857-1896), née Beatrice Philip, artist [more], which are probably from a later date: B. Whistler, Cupids (z251). Like other drawings of cupids in the Hunterian Art Gallery, these may be related to illustrations for a publication of Recréations postales by Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898), Symbolist writer and poet [more], proposed by JW in 1892 (see #10785).

10.  and after ... invitation
Written in JW's hand.
