I have delayed replying to your printed letter about the complimentary dinner to Mr Whistler, in the hope that I might enjoy the privilege of being present, but, alas, I find that my professional engagements will not allow it. This is a great disappointment to me, for the occasion is one that has my fullest & sincerest sympathy - I venture to think [p. 2] that Mr Whistler's genius has no truer admirer than myself, nor does anyone recognise more than I his valuable & masterful influence on contemporary art - Moreover I am proud to reckon myself among his friends - only journalistic duty would prevent my assisting at any function in his honor -
Kindly convey my regrets [p. 3] to Mr Whistler & to the Committee, & oblige
