Ma chère Madame Carmen -
J'ai recu [sic] votre lettre, et je suis bien péné de vous savoir encore souffrante! - Madame Addams[3] m'a dit que vous n'avez point pu assister à la lecture de mon dernier "message" aux élèves, à cause d'une indisposition qui vous faisait garder la chambre.
Mais avant son départ elle m'a fait savoir que vous alliez bien mieux - et parliez de votre prochain voyage en Italie -
Je sais combien vous avez du regretter de ne pas pu avoir été présente à la fermeture officielle de l'atelier - car j'avais insisté à ce vous présidiez en Patronne! Madame Carmen devait être là, pour clore elle même, et de sa propre autorité, son academie - "l'Academie Carmen" - ce qui aurait - été parfait!
J'avais bien songé à tout ce qui était du à la dignité de votre position - et j'avais arrangé avec Madame la Massière que vous soyez consultée, et mise au courant de la situation en tous ses détails - Madame Addams vous a bien dit tout ceci - mais nous avions calculés sans la maladie! et, ma pauvre Carmen, le grand jour venu, il n'y avait ni Patronne, ni Massière pour completer par leur présence la belle ceremonie - et recevoir les adieux etonnés des élèves! -
[p. 2] Mais que cela ne vous trouble point - Tout a été, autrement, parfait - et l'Academie Carmen a terminé sa brilliante carrière avec la distinction que lui était reconnue - et au grand regret, des éleves, dont qui ne se doutaient point pas du tout de cette fin subite et entièrement inattendue!
En un mot l'histoire de l'Academie Carmen, est une de plus jolies et des plus distinguées possible! - et se saura plus tard - Ainsi la Carmen, la belle Patronne peut bien se tenir fièrement parmi, les Italiennes - et ne pas avoir l'air d'avoir été abandonné par son professeur! - qu'elle ne voudrait pas faire confondre avec tous ceux, qui courent les pensionats! - et qui du reste, c'est a fait tout leur possible pour vous aider
Le repos que je n'ai jamais voulu prendre, vous le savez bien! m'a été ordonné - et apres ma longue absence, je dois rentrer par un voyage sur mer -
Je ne serai donc à Paris avant le milieu du mois de mai -
Maintenant, vous devez bien penser, je tou suis tout accablé de mes affaires! - desquelles je n'ai pas pu m'occuper depuis si longtemps - et certes pas dans la position d'être bien utile à personne! - -
Aussi Carmen il me semble que votre mari[4], dont j'ai toujours en bonne opinion, saura bien comment vous faire ce voyage en Italie -
Sans doute, si vous avez la permission du docteur, cela serait la meilleure chose possible - et vous reviendr[i]ez toute remise et belle comme la dernière fois, et nous travaillerons - et Trouverons bien à faire allez - et tout sera bien -
Mais ne me parlez jamais de ce ton de déseppoir! quand vous avez votre bon mari et[5] il ne vous manque réellement que vos occupations et les soins de l'atelier - que vous reprendrez à votre retour -
Et voyez Madame Addams qui est toujours gentile avec vous -
Pourquoi ne pas aller voir le Docteur Muller[6]? Il vous donnera les meilleurs conseils - et vous pourrez y aller de ma part - Vous vous rappelez son adresse - Rue Volnoy.

My dear Mrs Carmen -
I received your letter and I am very sorry to learn that you are still unwell! - Mrs Addams told me that you were in no way fit to attend the reading of my last 'message' to the pupils, because of an indisposition that kept you to your room.
But before leaving she informed me that you were in much better health now - and spoke of your upcoming voyage to Italy -
I know how much you must have regretted being unable to attend the official closure the studio - for I had insisted that you preside over it as Proprietress! Mrs Carmen was to be there, to close her academy - 'The Carmen Academy' in person, and of her own accord, - which would have - been perfect!
I had thought carefully over everything the dignity of your position merited - and I had arranged with Mme la Massière that you be consulted, and kept informed of every detail of the situation - Mrs Addams did tell you all of this - but we had not bargained on the illness! and, my poor Carmen, when the big day came, neither Proprietress nor Massière was there to grace the lovely ceremony with their presence – and to accept the astonished farewells, of the pupils! -
[p. 2] But may none of this trouble you - Everything was, otherwise, perfect - and the Carmen Academy ended its brilliant career with the distinction for which it was renowned - and to the great regret, of the pupils, of which who in no way anticipated this sudden and entirely unexpected end!
In short, the story of the Carmen Academy, is one of the most beautiful and the most distinguished possible! - and will come to be known later on - Thus Carmen, the beautiful proprietress can stand proudly amongst, Italian women - without appearing to have been abandoned by her professor! - whom she would not like to see confused with all those who take on any old pupil from the boarding schools - and who moreover, that is did everything in his power to help you
I never wanted to take a rest, as you well know! It was imposed on me - and after my long absence, I must return by sea -
Therefore I will not be in Paris before mid-May -
Now, you must surely think, I am utterly overwhelmed by my affairs! - which I have been unable to cope with for such a long time - and certainly not in a position to help anybody out much! - -
Also Carmen it seems to me that your husband, whom I have always held in high esteem, will be able to send you on this voyage to Italy -
No doubt, if you have the doctor's permission, that would be the best thing possible - and you would come back fully recovered and radiant like the last time, and we will work - and Will find a way to struggle on - and all will be well -
But never speak to me in that tone of despair! when you have your good husband and all you are really missing out on are your occupations and the care of the studio - which you will resume on your return -
And not to mention Mrs Addams who is always kind towards you -
Why not go and see Doctor Muller? He will give you the best advice - and you can go on my recommendation - You remember his address - Rue Volnoy.
