Dear Mrs Addams.
The address itself will tell you the reason why you have not heard from any of us before.
On our return from Paris we found Mr Whistler suffering from a very bad cold. The fogs and the Private Hotel had depressed him even more than the doctor; so now we have all got away. [p. 2] This then is the reason that you have not yet had our congratulations.
Mr Whistler means to write to you himself and tell you how pleased he has been with your letters, & that he thinks well of your plan of coming to London.
Meantime he begs to send his compliments, with much ceremony to the dainty little Diane [4]of Montparnasse.
We hope that you will soon be well & strong. There is a good deal to tell you about the annoyances of the studio, which have turned out [p. 3] very much more complicated and difficult to deal with than at first was expected
Indeed Mr Webb[5] thinks that for the present it would be wiser that the matter should drop.
Also the Kelly[6] people have turned out very unsatisfactorily, & Mr Whistler thinks it well that you should not go near them at present, even if there be anything to communicate, as he intends to withdraw from them.
Of course this is quite between ourselves.
You will let him know however anything that you or Mr Addams[7] may hear of Carmen[8] [p. 4] and her statements.
I must also tell you that the drawings which my sister[9] & I missed at the time of the moving, were mysteriously replaced.
With kindest regards, and again with our best wishes.
Believe me
Very sincerely yours.
Rosalind Birnie-Philip.
