Notes:
1. [January/June 1892?]
This is a design for the cover of a proposed publication of a book of quatrains based on addresses, written by Stéphane Mallarmé and called Récréations Postales. It is dated from related correspondence with William Heinemann (1863-1920), publisher [more]. See JW's proposal to Heinemann, #10785, and a further note, [21 February 1892], #08466.
2. Stéphane Mallarmé
Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898), Symbolist writer and poet [more].
3. ADS
This is written upon a large piece of paper folded into the shape of an envelope.
4. dessin
Fr., drawing, design. This is written in a vertical rectangular box in the top right corner, and was presumably intended to include the design for a stamp (see Cupid letting a bird out of a cage (M.1341)).
5. JAMES R OSGOOD
James Ripley Osgood (1836-1892), agent for Harper and Bros, publishers [more].
6. SM
This monogram is drawn at the tip of the envelope flap in red crayon, in imitation of a wax seal.
