Dear Mr Whistler
I have just seen Mr. White[4] who came with a message from his "proprietor" to the effect that he Mr. Holmes[5], admires the drawing immensely and would offer you £10. for the use of the drawing in question "Gants de Suède"[6], for one number of the "studio", coupled with the right to issue 50 proofs at say £1.1.0 in order to recoup himself for the outlay which he will incur altogether. Now if you agree to this, I will see that the impressions for the magazine are all good, as we have previously done in the Whirlwind and moreover these 50 proofs, which I should suggest should be on mounted, india on plain paper, can be printed from a transferred stone. What do you say?
I have received a second installment of Dutch paper, so have a good stock in hand for you. Mr. White was asking when your drawing for the Art Journal[7] was likely to appear, as it is advisable that two should not come out in the same month, perhaps you would tell me something about it when you write. There are a lot of artists buzzing around lithography just now!
My father[8] and I had hoped to have seen you this Christmas, and trust that your visit is only postponed and that for a short time.

6. Gants de Suède
JW agreed to let The Studio publish Gants de suède (C.35) on 11 December 1893, but the terms were not immediately agreeable to the artist (see #03357). JW later received a cheque from Gleeson White for 10 gns. and authorized Way to print the edition (JW to White, 18 January 1894, #08177). Gants de Suède was published in The Studio, vol. 3, no. 13, April 1894.
7. Art Journal
Negotiations with The Art Journal were lengthy because the owners, Messrs Virtue, could not decide on a suitable subject. The lithographs proposed by JW included Vitré: The Canal (C.63), Conversation under the Statue, Luxembourg Gardens (C.69), Little Draped Figure, Leaning (C.76),The Long Balcony (C.82) and The Little Balcony (C.83). Nursemaids: 'Les Bonnes du Luxembourg' (C.81) was specially drawn, and published in The Art Journal, vol. 46, no. 120, December 1894. T. R. Way wrote later that he acted as a sort of agent, which he found difficult, as people did not necessarily want what JW thought they ought to have (Way, Thomas Robert, Memories of James McNeill Whistler, the Artist, London and New York, 1912, p. 93; (see Spink, op. cit., p. 87, n.74.2).
