1.  [1864/1865?]
JW lived at 7 Lindsey Row between March 1863 and January 1866. The letter was stuck in the first of two albums of documents by C. A. Howell. The earliest securely dated letters from JW to Howell in the album date from 1864 ([17/24 May 1864], #02788), the last from 23 August 1881 (#02884). Furthermore, the unusual form of signature is seen only on a few letters dated between 1864 and 1866 (e.g. JW to Lord Houghton, #09152).

2.  Charles Augustus Howell
Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more]. This is the first of many letters from JW to Howell.

3.  DGR
The notepaper has the address and monogram of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), artist and poet [more].
