Notes:
1. [July 1878?]
Since Howell noted that this was the first proof, it must pre-date a similar subscription form promising 'first proofs' of the engraving and dated 26 July 1878 (JW to Forster, #11680).
2. Charles Augustus Howell

4. PORTRAIT OF THOMAS CARLYLE,
Howell had acquired the copyright of Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137) for £80 and six proofs, and he organised subscriptions for an engraving (see #02785, #11899). It was engraved by R. Josey, and published by H. Graves and Co. At the time of the Whistler v Ruskin trial the engraving was said to be under way (J. A. Rose to Walker, Martineau and Co., [6 Nov. 1878?], #12065). The first proofs were actually delivered on 2 December 1878 (Pennell, Elizabeth Robins, and Joseph Pennell, The Life of James McNeill Whistler, 2 vols, London and Philadelphia, 1908, I, pp. 226-27). Almost identical subscription forms were printed for Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother (YMSM 101) and Arrangement in Brown and Black: Portrait of Miss Rosa Corder (YMSM 203) (see #02412, #11682).
