THE EXHIBITION OF / INTERNATIONAL ART,
LONDON, S. W.
Dear Mr Whistler,
The matter of Mr Shannon's membership was brought up at yesterdays meeting.
A report is being prepared and will be forwarded to you.
The Council is obliged for the copies of your letters to Admiral Maxse.
It has decided to ultimate to the Admiral its willingness [p. 2] to have Mr Mempes submit works in the usual way, but desires at the same time to point out that Admiral Maxse is inaccurate in stating 'The others would have agreed to the proposal if you had done so['].
You will receive with this the Minutes of several meetings to date.
ppro Francis Howard
[Lea or Lca?].
2. Mr Shannon's membership
James Jebusa Shannon (1862-1923), genre and portrait painter [more] who became ARA (Associate Member of the Royal Academy) in 1897. JW wished to exclude Royal Academicians from the ISSPG (see Dorment, Richard, and Margaret F. MacDonald, James McNeill Whistler, exhibition catalogue, Tate Gallery, London, 1994, p. 54). The question of Shannon's membership had surfaced the previous summer (F. Howard to JW, #02319).
3. Admiral Maxse
Admiral Friedrich ('Frederick') Augustus Maxse (1833-1900), political writer [more]. Maxse was proprietor of the Prince's Rink Skating Club, Knightsbridge where the ISSPG held its first exhibition in May 1898.
