Dear Mr Hurlbert,

Knowing what a very heavy session it has been I have hitherto refrained from calling upon Mr W. H. Smith[4] the first Lord of the Treasury and obtruding my thanks upon his precious very valuable time; but will you let me add to my already great debt of gratitude to yourself yourself by conveying to the Rt Hon. him whom you know personally, my keen sense of the rare and courteous kindness I have experienced at his hands in the matter of the presentation of our memorial to H. M. the Queen[5].

Pray assure him that I am greatly touched by the sympathy he has shown in my part of the work, and beg him to accept my grateful appreciation of the patient interest so flattering in the midst of his arduous duties, with which he has watched over given us

witholding neither his advice nor and his protection and bringing his great influence to bear upon the

and so ensuring its ultimate assured the success of our success application.

Believe me
Always
