In consideration of Messrs Henry Graves & Co having this day advanced me the sum of one hundred pounds I do hereby agree to give my acceptance for the same bearing interest at the rate of ten per cent per annum and to deposit as security the portrait of Mrs Whistler and two nocturnes[4] of Battersea reach until such debt shall be fully satisfied.

4.  Mrs Whistler and two nocturnes
Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother (YMSM 101) and Nocturne in Grey and Gold (YMSM 155). The second nocturne of Battersea Reach is unidentified. The two nocturnes were exchanged by Howell in November 1878 for Arrangement in Brown and Black: Portrait of Miss Rosa Corder (YMSM 203) (see C. A. Howell to H. Graves & Co, #02185).
