2. Sheridan Ford
Sheridan Ford (1860-1922), poet, critic, politician and writer on art [more]. The author may also have been Mary Bacon Ford, née Martin, art agent [more] (see her correspondence with JW, #01439, #01440, #01442, #01444, #01445; #01447). JW was in France on a working honeymoon, after his marriage to Beatrix Whistler (1857-1896), née Beatrice Philip, artist [more] on 11 August. The Whistlers remained there until about early November although around mid September they returned to London for a brief spell. They appear to have stayed at the Chez Monsieur Leymarie, Rue de la Scellerie, Tours from mid September. See JW to H. Whistler, #06713 and C. J. W. Hanson #01970. Ford was keen to persuade JW to sign a contract to undertake a series of etchings to be entitled 'Whistler's American Etchings' and a lecture tour in America. The Fords were under pressure from a syndicate of New York investors whom they had persuaded to back the project (see M. B. Ford to JW, #01448).
