Notes:

1.  [7 June 1878]
This document was included after the printed record of the Minutes of the Board under the date 7 June 1878. The transaction was also indexed: 'Lease to Mr J. A. McN. Whistler of plots Nos. 37 and 38 Tite - street. Sealed p. 878, para 24' (MBW 497, Index).

2.  W. Wyke Smith
William Wyke Smith (1808-1878), Solicitor, Metropolitan Board of Works, London [more].

3.  Metropolitan Board of Works
On 14 August 1877 JW ordered plans for a new house and studio, the White House, in Tite Street, from Edward William Godwin (1833-1886), architect and designer [more] (#12335). The Metropolitan Board of Works objected to the simplicity of the facade designed by Godwin. They withheld the lease until additional, expensive, decorative details were added. JW moved into the White House in June 1878, and left in September 1879.
