This draft proposal was written by JW on two small pieces of paper interleaved in the SBA/RBA rough minute book. It is undated but may relate to a proposal put forward at the 1 December 1885 monthly meeting, recorded in the minutes simply in the following manner: 'The first matter under discussion relating to Mr Whistler's proposal, after a long discussion the matter was dropped'.

JW was elected to membership of the Society of British Artists in 1885, was elected President on 1 June 1886 and took office in December. He resigned in 1888.
