'Proposal[3] drafted by Whistler in his own hand. ? 1885/6'

Proposed by Mr Whistler, and seconded by

"That (in future) the list of Candidates for Election, pass first before the Council, whose duty it will be to select therefrom a number of names not exceeding three, -

That these three names be then submitted to the Society at the General Meeting for ballot - [p. 2] and that one candidate only be admitted -

That if, in the opinion of the Council, there be no name upon the list of Candidates worthy of admission, then upon that occasion no one will be balloted for -

That after each Election the old list be cancelled - ["]

1.  [1887?]
The sheet is inserted into the SBA rough minutes 1873-87. JW joined the SBA in 1885 and was elected President on 1 June 1886. Although it has been dated in another more recent hand '? 1885/6', the slightly autocratic tone of this proposal suggests it dates from after he took office in December 1886.

2.  Society of British Artists
A London based exhibiting society.

3.  Proposal
'Proposal ... 1885/6' written in another hand, at a much later date.
