Surely, my dear Cauty, it is by some error that Mr Hanson brings me your answer! - or could it be possible that my note failed in clearness -
I know it would never occur to you to send, for the sake of sending only, where I mean nothing to go! -
This is no matter of mere bye-law - but one of morale - and no one should more keenly, than yourself, percieve [sic] my intention to care for the new dignity & State I have achieved for this Society, in every detail, however minute - and notwithstanding all hindrances [p. 2] that belong to the Past - 'Nous avons changé tout cela'! and you my dear Mr Secretary, I rely upon implicitly as my right hand man, in all matters of delicacy & devotion -
In this particular case then, there is no question of Caffieri serving, but he must have no letter - even in the mere form of "notice to serve" -
See to this my dear Cauty - for the rest I am responsable [sic] -
1. [September/October 1887?]
