3. Nocturne
The paintings referred to are Nocturne: Black and Gold - The Fire Wheel (YMSM 169), Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket (YMSM 170), and probably Arrangement in Black and Brown: The Fur Jacket (YMSM 181). The Falling Rocket was targetted in Ruskin, John, 'Letter the Seventy-ninth' Fors Clavigera, 2 July 1877, pp. 181-213. At least two of these paintings were surety for loans to JW by Graves and Co.
