KING WILLIAM STREET,
STRAND, W. C.
Am I supposed to have forgotten indeed that in London there is one charming house whose brilliant hostess once remembered me! - Dear Mrs Jeune I have sadly wondered at my banishment - and now the pretty note that recalls me fills me with sorrow and vexation that I cannot come at once as I would for I have hopelessly entangled myself with some other entertainment given I doubt not entirely in my honor - how else!
Will you ever ask me again? - I really have a mind to go to America that you may have an excuse to bid me to a banquet on the occasion of my departure! -
Why would you not come to the Grosvenor yesterday? -
I went to make you my official call bringing my best wishes for this excellent New Year! -
With kindest thanks and devotion
There has been much literature of mine about lately that I hope you may have collected for your joy! - It was all meant for your eye and without your approval I shall have failed!
1. [January 1890/January 1892]
