Notes:

1.  20 November 1855
The date of 5 November noted in the margin may relate to JW's original application for this card, or to his admission to day classes on that same date (#01012).

2.  École Impériale et Spéciale de Dessin
The state school of art, design, mathematics and architecture. On 4 February 1856 JW's mother mentioned 'he goes to his drawing class just after breakfast until two o'clock, directly after school to a modelling school' (Anna Whistler to Gamble, #06471; see Drawing (M.210)). This presumably reflected what JW had told her about his work, although no letter on the subject has survived. Two drawings by JW reflect the contrasting ways in which the artist might actually have spent his evenings: An artist in his studio (M.211) shows the student at work, surrounded by drawings and lay figures; Scene from Bohemian life (M.213) shows young men and women smoking and drinking in comfortable intimacy.

3.  1855
The printed date is 1855, but the final figure has been written over with a '5', as though the writer expected the printed date to be '1854', as in JW's card for morning classes (#01012).

4.  [Belloir?]
Illegible.

5.  '5 novembre 1855.'
Written in right margin.
