The reference to 'black mounts' suggests that the proofs were not JW's work. They may have been photographs of JW, or prints by Menpes, such as M. L. Menpes, Six Portraits of Whistler (z179), drypoint (The University of Michigan Museum of Art, Accession No.: 1977/1.161, Image Accession No.: PCD3149-2022-0252-52).
