Our Reply

July 5th / 92.

Dear Sir,

We beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 4th inst[4] returning our account. It was at the instigation and under the careful superintendence of Mr Whistler that the careful and, as he considered, absolutely necessary process of cleaning was carried out. Your telegram consenting to the cleaning seemed to us to imply your willingness to bear the expense. As this work has certainly improved improved [sic] both the condition and appearance of the "Lange Leizen[5]", we would ask you to reconsider whether it could not be charged to your account. We have ourselves had numerous [p. 2] other disbursements in connection with this and the other pictures of the Whistler Exhibition[6].

Signed B V C
