Notes:
1. 22-27 October [1877]
Earlier entries in this ledger were dated 1877, and, like this entire page, were written by Mary Maud Franklin (1857- ca 1941), JW's model and mistress [more] (see #12734 and #12735).
2. J. Hogarth and Sons
J. Hogarth and Sons, print dealers.
3. The Dam Wood No. 3 x
The Dam Wood (K.145). For a discussion of the codes used by JW to indicate printing and sales, see #12734.
4. From Limehouse
This etching has not been identified. Limehouse Pier is on the north bank of the Thames, on a bend of the river. From there, the artist could see the docks and wharves of Rotherhithe, or look due south down Limehouse Reach towards Greenwich, or west towards the Lower Pool of London.
5. Lindsey Houses
Lindsey Houses (K.166).
6. From Billingsgate (Oct 16.) No. 1 x
A Sketch from Billingsgate (K.168). The annotations suggest that this impression was the first impression printed on 16 October 1877, and the 'x' could mean either that it was sold or returned. The addition of dates on this account is particularly useful in clarifying JW's printing practices.
7. Price's Candle Factory
Price's Candle Works (K.154).
8. London Bridge
London Bridge (K.153).
9. Pickle herring Stairs
From Pickle-Herring Stairs (K.167).
10. Greenhithe
Probably The Thames towards Erith (K.165).
11. Battersea Morn
Probably Battersea: Dawn (K.155).
12. Guitar player
The Guitar Player (K.140).
13. Siesta
Possibly The Model lying down (K.121) or Nude Girl, Reclining (K.126).
14. Flo
Florence Leyland (K.110).
16. Fannie
Fanny Leyland (K.108).
17. The little Pool
The Little Pool (K.74).
18. Babs
Elinor Leyland (K.109) is a portrait of Elinor Leyland (1861-1952), later Mrs Speed [more], the baby of the Leyland family, whom JW called 'Babs'.
19. The draped figure
Possibly The Model Resting (K.100).
20. st
This might refer to the 'state' of the etching, but the inscription is unclear.
21. Chelsea Wharf
Chelsea Wharf (K.89).
22. Guitar player (Delatre)
The context suggests that this impression of The Guitar Player (K.140) was printed by Auguste Delâtre (1822-1907), printer [more].
23. Chelsea Wharf (Goulding)
The context suggests that this impression of Chelsea Wharf (K.89) was printed by Frederick Goulding (1842-1909), printer and print-maker [more]. The etching itself dates from about 1870. Goulding may have printed it when he was printing the Thames set.
