Notes:

1.  [August/December 1878]
JW sent a similar subscription form and promised 'first proofs' of the engraving in a letter dated 26 July 1878 to Matthew Forster (1826-1881), barrister, of Frere, Forster and Frere, solicitors [more] (#11680). In fact the first proofs were delivered on 2 December 1878 (Pennell, Elizabeth Robins, and Joseph Pennell, The Life of James McNeill Whistler, 2 vols, London and Philadelphia, 1908, I, pp. 226-27).

2.  Charles Augustus Howell
Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more].

3.  James Anderson Rose
James Anderson Rose (1819-1890), solicitor [more]. Since the document came with his collection to the Library of Congress, it is assumed Howell sent him an extra copy.

4.  PDS
There are several other copies of this circular (see #02785, #02411, #11680).

5.  THOMAS CARLYLE
Josey's engraving of Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137) was published in a limited edition by Henry Graves and Co. of Pall Mall. Howell acquired the copyright of the portrait for £80 and six proofs, and he also organised the subscriptions.

6.  RICHARD JOSEY
Richard Josey (1840-1906), reproductive engraver [more].
