Dear Mrs. Farquhar -

The little book[4] is quite perfect! - and dainty! - like the giver! -

I shall delight in it I know - and I shall value it as a souvenir of all your kindness - and sympathy - [p. 2] and charming courtesy in the studio - and I am much touched by your pretty thought of me -

Believe me always,
dear Mrs. Farquhar,
Very devotedly Yours

J. McNeill Whistler. -

Notes:

1.  21 January [1898]
The year date is not clear but appears to read '1898.' The butterfly signature is of the form used in 1898. At one time this letter was associated with an envelope postmarked 21 January 1900, but this appears to be incorrect (#13888).

2.  Marion Farquhar
Marion Farquhar (b. ca 1872, m. 1897), née Peck [more], sitter for Portrait of Miss Marion Peck (YMSM 439).

3.  ALS
Written on deep bordered mourning paper, indicating a date after the death of Beatrix Whistler (1857-1896), née Beatrice Philip, artist [more].

4.  book
Unidentified.
