[sketch[3] of paintings in a gallery:]
Forbes' Sea piece
Oval Cowan's shop Nocturne
Phryne Cigale
My dear Lavery -
In great haste, a line to let you see what I mean - This would make perfect [p. 2] hanging - and be something new -
Much better than forever the old full lengths -
So thats all right! -
I have already telegraphed to Cowan[4] - and you will get the Forbes'[5] sea piece - which has never been seen - and will go with great [swing?] at the top -
This must go -
Will write again directly -
Always sincerely
J McN Whistler

3. sketch
JW took great care over the hanging of his own panel of pictures at the 2nd Exhibition, Pictures, Drawings, Prints and Sculptures, International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers, London, 1899, as he had in 1898. The sketch, Plan of a panel of pictures for the ISSPG (M.1582), shows the hanging scheme of Purple and Gold: Phryne the Superb! - Builder of Temples (YMSM 490) and Nocturne: Grey and Gold - Chelsea Snow (YMSM 174), which were not shown, and Blue and Silver: Trouville (YMSM 66), Rose and Brown: La Cigale (YMSM 495), Rose and Gold: The Little Lady Sophie of Soho (YMSM 504), which were.
4. Cowan
John James Cowan (1846-1936), paper manufacturer and collector [more]. He apparently did not lend Nocturne: Grey and Gold - Chelsea Snow (YMSM 174).
5. Forbes'
James Staats Forbes (1823-1904), railway manager and collector [more], who lent Blue and Silver: Trouville (YMSM 66).
