'22 April 1898 postmark'

My dear Lavery.

I tell you what you might do - I dont want the Carlyle[4] brought out of his gallery again - at present - nor do I want the Furred Jacket[5] brought out at this moment -

I do not wish this - but as I said . . I will tell you what you might do, [p. 2] You might write at once to Cowan[6] & borrow his "Piano[7]" picture - and the "Thames in Ice[8]" -

Those two have not been seen for a long time - - Cowan was most charming about them when here - and told me he would gladly lend them when I wished - At the moment I did n't think of your having them - indeed I was scarcely well enough to think of any thing -

However this will do excellently - and with them I will try & send over one or two heads[9] - which is unusual with me - at least so people suppose - So thats all right -

My other works have as you know all had to be abandoned for the time —

Dont be over saddened and solemn about Committee matters but write me something amusing as one Irishman should to another! that I may think I am getting rid of the "grippe[10]" as I laugh!
