This letter was among papers given to Princeton University by Henry Van Dyck, Jr. An accompanying note, written on paper with the embossed heading 'LEGATION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', reads 'Holograph letter from James McNeill Whistler given to me by Thos. Whistler -'. Underneath this is a partly illegible note in another hand: '(who invited HvD to go [illegible] [allowing 19 / 6?]'.
