Dear Sir/
In reply to your question we have to say that we certainly have not sent out any copy of the "Ten o'Clock" to the press, or to anybody else excepting yourself. The work is still in the [p. 2] printer's hands, and we have for a long time past been advertising it only as "shortly" to be published; indeed, only a few proofs have so far been taken from the type.
Yrs faithfully,
Chatto & Windus
J. A. McN. Whistler Esq

Notes:
1. Chatto and Windus
London firm of publishers. JW's 'Ten O'Clock Lecture',' his chief public statement on art, was published on 11 May 1888. However, a review had already been published in the Pall Mall Gazette on 6 March which prompted a flurry of correspondence between JW and the 'Reviewer' (probably Marion Henry Alexander Spielmann (1858-1948), journalist and writer on art [more]). It is possible that the whole incident was engineered by JW to publicise the volume. See JW to the Editor, Pall Mall Gazette, #13304, #10936, #11424, #10937.
