Beefsteak[4] Club,
King William Street,
Strand, W. C.

My dear Baddeley -

I am awfully sorry that I am unable to accept your kind invitation for Saturday next - but I had already engaged myself to the Probyns[5].

Yesterday I meant to have called upon you on my way to [Tite][6] Street - but was prevented - otherwise this note should have been written then -

With very many thanks
Sincerely yours

J. McN. Whistler

Notes:

1.  [October 1878/September 1879]
Dated from other correspondence with Baddeley, especially Baddeley's letter to JW, #00232.

2.  Welbore St Clair Baddeley
Welbore St Clair Baddeley (1856-1945), traveller, amateur archaeologist, and writer [more].

3.  [Published]
Typescript copy on a 'press release' letter of an original letter sold at Smith Sale, Anderson Galleries, New York, c. 19 April 1921, lot 374. The item was referred to as '2 pages (1 sheet) 12mo.'

4.  Beefsteak
This address would probably have been printed on the original note.

5.  Probyns
Sir Dighton Macnaghten Probyn (1833-1924), Secretary to the Prince of Wales [more], and Letitia, Lady Dighton Probyn (m. 1872), née Thellusson.

6.  [Tite]
A blank space was left in the typescript copy, but 'Tite' Street, being JW's address, may have been the word used in the original.
