Notes:
1. Halling, Pearce and Stone
Linen drapers.
2. 'recd 30th'
Written in another hand perhaps that of Theodore Frederick Allingham (b. 1845), solicitor [more], or James Anderson Rose (1819-1890), solicitor [more].
3. claim
The firm seems to have waited some time before instructing proceedings against JW. A writ from Linnley and Linnley, on behalf of Halling, Pearce and Stone, was forwarded by T. Allingham to J. A. Rose on 15 January 1879 (#12085).
4. '311'
Added in another hand, circled; JW's legal documents were collated and numbered, possible by J. A. Rose or his clerk. This bill (p. 3) is on a separate sheet of paper but may have been included with the letter.
5. 35. 17. 2
This sum appears on JW's list of creditors in his bankruptcy papers, #11926.
