2 Lindsey Row.
Old Battersea bridge -
Dear Leyland -
I am going to ask you for more money! - This you see is the festive season at which a struggle with the ennemy [sic] becomes daily more difficult - I come to you for ammunition as mine is exhausted, and I am to do great decisive battle with strong forces on Thursday I fear! - Will you kindly send me the ballance [sic] left for your picture, which [p. 2] is steadily progressing - and depend upon me for it's completion as soon as possible -
Believe me dear Leyland
J A. M. Whistler
R. F. [sic] Leyland Esq.
'Send 50 gnas. balance'
1. [January 1867?]
A date in early January is likely because of the reference to the 'festive season'. This could be 1867, if Leyland's notes written on a letter from JW of 5 October , (#08793), indicating a payment to JW of £50 on 4 January 1867, relate to this request. JW's exact date of entry to 2 Lindsey Row is not certain, but he must have moved in before 1 February (see JW to C. A. Howell, 1 February 1867, #10039).
Quoted in part in Ferriday, Peter, 'Peacock Room' in The Architectural Review, no. 749, vol. 125 (June 1959), p. 409.
5. 'Send 50 gnas. balance'
Note written in Leyland's hand. He seems to have paid JW £105 in addition to the original price agreed for the picture (see JW's acknowledgement, 26 May [1867/1868?], #08789).
