Why dont you send over the rest of the Photographs[4] for me to sign now - for I hope that we shall get off again soon -

Tell me what is this I see in the English papers hinting at the wiping out of one of Mr Jones' pictures[5] by the photographer?

There are rumours going about here!! and [p. 2] a rather droll - if pathetic story - of the Boussod[6] & Valadon's agony when they learned the price!! "Deux cent mille francs[7]"!! - -

Tell us your version. -

I suppose you are all terribly down at the Goupils just now!

No business I suppose! - I have several new lithographs[8] - Do you want to buy? they are beauties - 15 p. cent discount you know is 2.gs a piece - and 3 gs. for the coloured lithographs - of which I have two new ones[9] -

However this is I fancy too sad a moment for such frivolities! -

You might write us some news - Who have you seen? - and what pictures?

An album of photographs of paintings, mostly those exhibited in Nocturnes, Marines and Chevalet Pieces, Boussod, Valadon & Cie, Goupil Gallery, London, 1892.

5.  Mr Jones' pictures
Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898), painter and designer [more]. Love Among the Ruins was the subject of a lawsuit, at which Thomson later suggested JW might like to appear as a witness; see Thomson to JW, 23 October 1893, #05790. E. Burne-Jones, Love Among the Ruins (z283), a gouache painted 1870-1873, was first exhibited at the Dudley Gallery in 1873. Highly acclaimed, and repeatedly exhibited, it was sent for exhibition at Goupil's Paris branch in 1893, with intsturctions that it should be photographed. Ignoring the artist's note on the verso saying that it was a watercolour, Goupil's washed it over with white of egg, and badly damaged it. Late in his life, Burne-Jones discovered that this could be removed with ox-gall, and he restored and repainted it. Meanwhile, in 1893-94, he had painted an oil version of the subject (E. Burne-Jones, Love Among the Ruins (z282)) which contemporary critics thought was well-painted but lacked the mystery and atmosphere of the original (Christopher Wood, Burne-Jones, London, 1998, pp. 62, 64).
