[...] Curiously enough when I received your note, I was on the point of writing to ask him kindly to lend the Portrait in Pink for a most important International Exhibition in Brussels, in which I have been chosen as a representative of English Painting - and your pictures would be, above all others, delighted in Abroad - The one in black velvet, by the way, was, I may tell you, an immense success in Paris -
If I may have the pink picture, and I trust that Sir Henry will let these works be seen abroad where they are understood and appreciated, will you kindly send me a line [p. 2] here,
that enclosing an order to remove the picture from Park Lane that I may send it on at once, for there is no time to be lost -
The picture would be insured for a thousand. -
With kindest regards, and the best wishes for New Year to both,
Very Sincerely Yours
J McNeill Whistler -

Arrangement in Black: Lady Meux (YMSM 228) had been exhibited in 100th exhibition, Ouvrages de peinture, sculpture, architecture, gravure et lithographie des artistes vivants, Palais des Champs Elysées, Paris, 1882, although it was not considered 'quite finished' (see letter from H. Meux to JW, 27 April , #04066).
