Notes:

1.  [14 September/October 1890]
Dated by reference to letters on JW's quarrel with A. Moore (see below).

2.  [Ethel Birnie Philip?]
Ethel Whibley (1861-1920), née Philip, JW's sister-in-law [more]. The same writing appears on #02165. It is quite like that of Beatrix Whistler (1857-1896), née Beatrice Philip, artist [more], but may be that of her sister, who helped at times with business affairs.

3.  Env
This envelope was used to store the listed correspondence, and was not an envelope which had originally enclosed these letters for mailing.

4.  Whistler
Double underlined.

5.  Mr Ellis
Graham Ellis, possibly a journalist [more]. See #01053.

6.  Augustus Moore
Augustus Martin Moore (d. 1918), journalist and acting manager [more].

7.  Mr Rowe
George W. Rowe, lawyer, third husband of Louise Jopling [more]. See #13265.

8.  Mrs Jopling's
Louise Jopling (1843-1933), née Goode, later Mrs Jopling-Rowe, artist [more].

9.  Runciman
James Runciman (1852-1891), writer [more]. See #05343.
