Thursday
My dear friend,
I am very much alarmed at your letter, which was forwarded to me from the Terminus[3].
You speak of being so ill!
When I left Paris, I congratulated myself that you had, in a measure, resumed, or rather recovered, your old form, and that complete recovery was only a matter of fine weather and time. And now to hear that you feel horribly!
I am sorry that I did not press you more than I did, to make a little tour in this beautiful Country, which you already know so well. I think you would have been benefitted.
[p. 2] As to the cheque, I did not ask you to return it. I understood you to write that the picture was mine at £450 /- /- & that any sum that I received over 600 /- /- was to be divided between us. Also, that the picture was to be exhibited once at least, this to be a sina qui non. (This last sounds well so I put it in). I said that when I returned to Paris you could send the painting[4] to me in London. As to the marine[5] & one or two others I have to wait, as I do not know if there is money enough to pay for them[6].
Now, am I clear?
I daresay I was not clear in the last letter I wrote but hope that I am now. In any case, I expect to be in Paris on Sunday [p. 3] and will call & see you at once & settle the matter. Perhaps you may be induced to go away & drop work for awhile.
Trusting that this will find you much improved, I am, as always,
Sincerely Yours
O'K-
Monsieur Whistler
Paris
I leave here tomorrow, Amboise Blois &c.
