Dear Mr. Whistler,
I received a letter from New York in which they ask if you will kindly write the promised letter in regard to the unsigned Chelsea picture[2]. You may remember that the first one was lost in some way - provoking enough - and you said you would write another one. Possibly it had not arrived at the time of writing (July 7th), as I think you said to me in Paris that you had sent another one to New York. I am sorry to trouble you about so small a matter, but if the letter is forthcoming, the picture can be disposed of.
I called on Mrs. Pennell[3], but unfortunately she was at Cambridge.
The weather here is very cool and [p. 2] pleasant - probably the hot weather is over now.
I leave here tomorrow for Liverpool and sail on Wednesday for New York on the Teutonic. I wish you were going also, though accounts of great heat, storms &c. are frequent, and liable to deter you from visiting America. Trusting that Mrs. Whistler[4] & yourself are in good health, believe me,

Possibly Nocturne: Blue and Silver - Battersea Reach (YMSM 152), which JW certainly offered Kennedy in 1894, and which was signed later, possibly after JW had sold the painting direct to Isabella Stewart Gardner (1840-1924), née Stewart, collector [more], in 1895.
