James McNeil [sic] Whistler Esq.
London.

Dear Sir:

Through our Mr Kennedy[2] we learn with much pleasure that you intend to visit New York[3] next fall, and as you probably wish to arrange an exhibition[4] of your works, we beg leave to place our exhibition room, which is about the same size as Mess. Dowdeswells[5], where you had your Watercolors last year, at your disposition. We have instructed our Mr Kennedy to call on you again before his return home, to see what arrangements you desire to make. Should he not be able to see you, we should be much obliged if you would favor us with a few lines, regarding the subject.

Most respectfully

Hermann Wunderlich & Co.

Notes:

1.  Hermann Wunderlich & Co.
Art dealers and publishers.

2.  Mr Kennedy
Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932), dealer with H. Wunderlich and Co., New York [more].

3.  visit New York
While JW declared his intention to visit America on a number of occasions (see for example Whistler, James McNeill, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, 2nd ed., London and New York, 1892, pp. 184-85), the trip never materialised.

4.  exhibition
While JW had already exhibited etchings with Wunderlich a couple of years previously (50 Etchings and Drypoints (Venice Second Series), H. Wunderlich and Co., New York, 1883) and he continued to sell his work through the firm (see list of etchings, #13091), an exhibition of his watercolours, oils and pastels did not take place until 1889. See 'Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', H. Wunderlich and Co., New York, 1889.

5.  Mess. Dowdeswells
London firm of art dealers and printsellers. JW held exhibitions of watercolours and pastels there in 1884 and 1886 ('Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', Messrs Dowdeswell, London, 1884; 'Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', Second Series, Messrs Dowdeswell, London, 1886).
