Date confirmed by comparison of writing and butterfly signature with other menus. Also, Whistler bought mackerel from John S. Charles (fl. 1876-1887), fishmonger in Pimlico, London [more], on 31 January 1878 (#08848).

2.  Potage
The menu, written in French, consisted of 'Potage bonne femme' (literally 'good housewife's soup', comprising leek, potato and carrot), followed by mackerel, cutlets with golden purée (probably carrot or turnip), stewed pigeons, mince pies, stewed pears and coffee.
