Notes:
1. 15 September [1877]
Date confirmed by comparison of butterfly signature, writing and paper with other menus. Whistler bought salmon from John S. Charles (fl. 1876-1887), fishmonger in Pimlico, London [more], on 15 September 1877 (#08848).
2. Potage
The menu, written in French, consisted of 'Potage bonne femme', literally, good housewife's soup, comprising leek, potato and carrot, plus salmon, mutton cutlets, stewed apple, macaroni cheese and coffee.
3. drawing
Pencil drawing, possibly by Edward William Godwin (1833-1886), architect and designer [more], who was designing a new house and studio for JW in Tite Street, the White House.
