Notes:

1.  28 November [1877]
Dated by comparison of butterfly signature, writing and paper with other menus. Whistler bought sole from John S. Charles (fl. 1876-1887), fishmonger in Pimlico, London [more], on 28 November 1877 (#08848).

2.  Potage
The menu, written in French, consisted of soup 'al Puchero' (a Spanish 'pot au feu'), filets of sole, mutton cutlets, duckling, mince pies, stewed pears and coffee.

3.  drawings
Pencil drawings, one possibly showing the facade of the White House being built for JW on Tite Street, which may have been drawn by Edward William Godwin (1833-1886), architect and designer [more]. There is also a rough sketch of a figure, similar in pose to r.: Two sketches of Nellie Farren; v.: Studies of two actors or actresses, one playing a banjo (M.667) but more roughly drawn.
